• Oiling: This is the more common choice for Merbau and new timber often comes pre-oiled. Oil penetrates the wood, enhancing its natural beauty and providing protection from moisture, UV rays, and mildew. Penetrating oil doesn’t form a surface layer so it weathers naturally over time requiring reapplication every few years.
• Painting: While possible, painting Merbau requires more prep work and is best done on un-treated timber. Due to natural oils and tannins in Merbau, you’ll need to ensure a good bond by removing surface oils and using a stain blocker primer to prevent the wood colour from bleeding through lighter paints. Paint provides a more opaque finish and a wider range of colours but requires more frequent maintenance as the paint layer can crack, peel, or chip.

Merbau has a beautiful warm colour that can vary depending on its age and exposure:

Freshly cut has an orange-golden brown colour and will age to a darker reddish-brown. There’s also some variation within the wood itself. The core of the tree (heartwood) features rich brown tones, whereas the sapwood can be a paler yellow-orange.
