Spotted Gum Timber

Spotted Gum timber is a premium Australian hardwood that is used widely used for structural, exterior and internal construction projects. It is popular for its grain structure and vibrant colours.

Spotted gum timber has been traditionally used only as structural timber. However, considering its natural beauty and strength, Spotted Gum timber has found favour in many aesthetic and architectural design applications.

It is extremely adaptable and a naturally strong timber, making it ideally suited to numerous indoor and outdoor applications.

Spotted Gum is a well regarded and valued timber. Spotted gum is the common name for four species that are grown in Australia. This species of timber have straight, slender trunks with smooth bark that is shed in patches, giving the trees their characteristic spotted appearance.

Due to various related species, the colours of spotted gum timber may vary from a dark chocolate brown to a pale light brown heartwood. When sawn the grain can be wavy, producing a unique appearance ideal for various aesthetic applications. Spotted gum timber may vary in appearance but not in durability class or strength.

Hardwood vs Softwood

Spotted Gum timber is a distinctive hardwood prized for its strength and durability. Different construction projects call for different kinds of timber supplies. Both hardwood and softwood are used for everything from structural to decorative projects.

It is important to note that soft and hardwood timber are distinguished in nature in terms of their reproduction rather than their end appearance and attributes.

The trees from which hardwood is obtained tend to be slower growing, meaning the wood is usually denser. Hardwood comes from broad-leaved trees such as Spotted Gum, Ironbark and Merbau etc. Softwood is harvested from trees that produce cones and seeds such as pines and cedars.

Hardwood is considered to be the most versatile construction material. Applications range from gorgeous furniture, musical instruments, flooring, construction and boatbuilding. It is a material of durability and beauty. It is available in countless combinations of species, specifications and colours. As a result of their slow growth and their condensed, more complex structure, hardwoods offer a superior level of strength and durability.

Hardwood timber tends to be more resilient than softwoods and is reserved for projects that require maximum durability. They are often used for construction projects that rely on strength and durability, such as flooring, fencing, decking and high-quality furniture.

Softwood is renowned for its versatility and strength.  This timber has a large variety of applications and a known for their aesthetic appeal. Softwood can be used across for both internal and external projects – from furniture and flooring to decking, landscaping and structural applications.

They are a flexible timber and are lighter in weight and less dense than most hardwoods. Softwoods are most commonly used for interior mouldings, windows production and generating sheet materials such as plywood. Softwood is best utilised on doors, windows, ceilings and furniture.

In our yard on the Sunshine Coast, we have our own sawmill, non-CCA treatment plant, kilns, dressing shed, and can source custom oil on request.

Known for our hardwoods, our range also includes accoya timber, spotted gum, and building product lines such as pine framing, plywood, engineered timber, and fibre cement products.

Our History

We began Gowan Lea Timbers over 25 years ago when we decided to open a small retail yard for timber needs on the rapidly growing Sunshine Coast of Queensland. We started with two staff members, a forklift, a flat-bed truck, and an office in a shipping container, and as we grew, we gained a solid reputation for boasting the best hardwood around.

It didn’t take us by surprise. Our mill—Gowan Lea Sawmilling Company—had been operating for over 40 years and was already a well-respected wholesaler of premium quality western QLD Spotted Gum and Ironbark products. However, when the Queensland State Government bought out and closed Gowan Lea Sawmilling Company through a Regional Forestry Agreement process in 2007, the retail timber yard was left without a supply of the premium hardwood that our business relied upon.

It was then we entered into a productive relationship with Mary Valley Timbers, a green hardwood sawmill near Gympie, who had a similar focus on quality and cut 95% Spotted Gum and Ironbark.
