The Benefits Of Merbau Timber

Why Choose Merbau Timber Supplies?

Strength and Workability

Merbau timber is renowned for its incredible strength and workability. While not as hard as some other hardwoods, it remains easy to saw through and manipulate, requiring minimal strain during planning and laying. This  makes it a preferred choice for various indoor and outdoor woodworking projects.

Ideal for Outdoor Use

Classified as a class 1 wood, Merbau timber is exceptionally well-suited for outdoor applications. Its stability and low shrinkage/ expansion rate make it perfect for decking boards and outdoor furniture, ensuring durability and longevity even in harsh weather conditions.

Degree of Fire Resistance

Merbau timber boasts a level of fire resistance, making it a safe choice for areas prone to bushfires. Its ability to resist catching fire easily adds an extra layer of safety and peace of mind, particularly in the Australian climate.

Unique Style

Merbau timber is celebrated for its distinctive orange-brown color and interlocking grain pattern. Additionally, its sapwood offers a striking contrast, ranging from light yellow to ivory white. These unique tones and patterns can be further enhanced and customized with various oils, allowing you to achieve your desired style and aesthetic effortlessly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Merbau timber is a durable and versatile construction material that can be used for an extensive range of projects, including:

  • Structures and panels
  • Exterior joinery such as cladding, windows, doors, shutters and more
  • Carpentry and interior fittings
  • Flooring
  • Decks and stairs
  • Musical instruments

Merbau timber can be painted and oiled, but the choice depends on the condition of the timber, desired finish and level of maintenance you’re comfortable with.

  • Oiling: This is the more common choice for Merbau and new timber often comes pre-oiled. Oil penetrates the wood, enhancing its natural beauty and providing protection from moisture, UV rays, and mildew. Penetrating oil doesn’t form a surface layer so it weathers naturally over time requiring reapplication every few years.
  • Painting: While possible, painting Merbau requires more prep work and is best done on un-treated timber. Due to natural oils and tannins in Merbau, you’ll need to ensure a good bond by removing surface oils and using a stain blocker primer to prevent the wood colour from bleeding through lighter paints. Paint provides a more opaque finish and a wider range of colours but requires more frequent maintenance as the paint layer can crack, peel, or chip.

Merbau timber has a beautiful warm colour that can vary depending on its age and exposure:

Freshly cut has an orange-golden brown colour and will age to a darker reddish-brown. There’s also some variation within the wood itself. The core of the tree (heartwood) features rich brown tones, whereas the sapwood can be a paler yellow-orange.

When deciding between traditional timber and composite timber for your project, several factors come into play. Traditional timber offers a natural and authentic aesthetic, while composite timber provides enhanced durability and resistance to environmental elements.

Consider your project’s specific requirements, such as desired appearance, maintenance needs, longevity, and budget, to make the best choice. We can assist you in evaluating these factors to determine which option suits your project best.

Choosing the right timber for your project involves a number of considerations. Start by assessing the project’s location, climate conditions, and intended use of the timber.

Factors like strength, durability, resistance to pests and decay, and maintenance requirements should also be considered.

Our experienced team can guide you through the timber selection process, considering your project’s specific needs, and recommend the most suitable timber options available.

Protecting timber from pests and decay is essential to ensure its longevity. Proper timber treatment, such as applying preservatives, can safeguard against insect infestation and fungal decay. Additionally, regular maintenance, including sealing, staining, or painting, creates a protective barrier and enhances timber’s durability.
