Why Merbau Timber?

Merbau Timber Brisbane

Known for its unique beauty and style, Merbau timber is also a hard-wearing and durable timber that is borer and termite resistant when properly treated. With a natural class durability rating of 1 above ground and 3 in the ground- Merbau is set to last almost a lifetime!

The secret to Merbau timber’s success and aesthetic is the abundance of natural oils within this wood. These oils protect Merbau from shrinking, cracking and splitting. However, it is important to note that the mineral deposits found within the wood are water-soluble and susceptible to staining.

Despite its strength and durability, Merbau timber is relatively flexible and easy to turn, which is why it is extensively used in furniture and various external construction projects. When properly treated, a Merbau deck and timber materials will serve you for many years to come!

Merbau is a great timber option for various projects with natural durability and a beautiful appearance. Get in touch with Gowan Lea Timbers for all your timber needs!

Merbau Timber:
The Benefits?

Merbau Timber Brisbane

Merbau Timber is chosen by builders for a variety of reasons. These advantages include style, strength and resistance to wood borers, such as termites, and weathering.

Strength and Workability: Merbau is an incredible solid timber material. While not as hard as other hardwoods, it is easy to saw through and work with. Thus little strain is needed when it comes to planning and laying this wood.

As a class 1 wood, Merbau timber is ideally suited for outdoor use, making it the perfect decision for decking boards and outdoor furniture. This is on the grounds that it is very stable and has a generally low shrinkage/development rate (which is basic).

Degree of Fire Resistance: With some fire resistance, Merbau is a timber that does not catch alight easily. Thus, rated for use in bush-fire prone areas and ideal for the Australian climate.

Style: Merbau is known for its interesting orange-brown colour and interlocking grain pattern, with its contrasting sapwood that ranges from a light yellow to an ivory white. These tones can be altered and enhanced with various oils to suit any desired style or aesthetic.

Hardwood vs Softwood

Merbau Timber Brisbane

As the name suggests Merbau is a distinctive hardwood prized for its strength and durability. Different construction projects call for different kinds of timber supplies. Both hardwood and softwood are used for everything from structural to decorative projects.

It is important to note that soft and hardwood timber are distinguished in nature in terms of their reproduction rather than their end appearance and attributes.

The trees from which hardwood is obtained tend to be slower growing, meaning the wood is usually denser. Hardwood comes from broad-leaved trees such as Spotted Gum, Ironbark and Merbau etc. Softwood is harvested from trees that produce cones and seeds such as pines and cedars.

Hardwood is considered to be the most versatile construction material. Applications range from gorgeous furniture, musical instruments, flooring, construction and boatbuilding. It is a material of durability and beauty. It is available in countless combinations of species, specifications and colours.

As a result of their slow growth and their condensed, more complex structure, hardwoods offer a superior level of strength and durability.

Hardwood timber tends to be more resilient than softwoods and is reserved for projects that require maximum durability. They are often used for construction projects that rely on strength and durability, such as flooring, fencing, decking and high-quality furniture.

Softwood is renowned for its versatility and strength.  This timber has a large variety of applications and a known for their aesthetic appeal. Softwood can be used across for both internal and external projects – from furniture and flooring to decking, landscaping and structural applications.

They are a flexible timber and are lighter in weight and less dense than most hardwoods. Softwoods are most commonly used for interior mouldings, windows production and generating sheet materials such as plywood. Softwood is best utilised on doors, windows, ceilings and furniture.

Our History

Merbau Timber Brisbane

We began Gowan Lea Timbers over 25 years ago when we decided to open a small retail yard for timber needs on the rapidly growing Sunshine Coast of Queensland. We started with two staff members, a forklift, a flat-bed truck, and an office in a shipping container, and as we grew, we gained a solid reputation for boasting the best hardwood around.

It didn’t take us by surprise. Our mill—Gowan Lea Sawmilling Company—had been operating for over 40 years and was already a well-respected wholesaler of premium quality western QLD timber products. However, when the Queensland State Government bought out and closed Gowan Lea Sawmilling Company through a Regional Forestry Agreement process in 2007, the retail timber yard was left without a supply of the premium hardwood that our business relied upon.

It was then we entered into a productive relationship with Mary Valley Timbers, a green hardwood sawmill near Gympie, who had a similar focus on quality and cut 95% Spotted Gum and Ironbark.
