Spotted Gum Decking Sunshine Coast

Corymbia maculata, or more commonly known as the Spotted Gum is a premium Australian hardwood that is used widely used for structural, exterior and internal construction projects. It is popular for its grain structure and vibrant colours.

Appearance: While growing, spotted gum trees have a grey-blue bark that is then shed in spotty patches, giving it its recognizable name and appearance.

Timber planks of spotted gum often have a course texture and a wavy grain. This variety in texture gives it the look that many people enjoy in their homes. The colouring of Spotted Gum timber will vary according to where it is grown and harvested. This means it is possible to have a deck that includes blondes, light browns and darker brown tones.

Workability:  Despite its strength and density spotted gum is an excellent timber to work. It often has few imperfections and a good level of natural oils allows for easy cutting. It is a timber that accepts oil and stain well. It has a lower tannin content than most other eucalyptus species, meaning that there are less tannin staining and bleed-through.
While it is great for decking construction, Spotted Gum is also a good timber for carving.

Common Uses: Due to its various benefits spotted gum is used in a variety of ways. From flooring, cladding and decking to high impact tools such as axe handles and diving boards.

As a strong and durable wood, Spotted Gum is regularly used in various engineering, infrastructure and structural projects. It is used in mining, shipbuilding, and bridge construction.

Our History

Spotted Gum Decking Sunshine Coast

We began Gowan Lea Timbers over 25 years ago when we decided to open a small retail yard for timber needs on the rapidly growing Sunshine Coast of Queensland. We started with two staff members, a forklift, a flat-bed truck, and an office in a shipping container, and as we grew, we gained a solid reputation for boasting the best hardwood around.

It didn’t take us by surprise. Our mill—Gowan Lea Sawmilling Company—had been operating for over 40 years and was already a well-respected wholesaler of premium quality western QLD Spotted Gum and Ironbark products. However, when the Queensland State Government bought out and closed Gowan Lea Sawmilling Company through a Regional Forestry Agreement process in 2007, the retail timber yard was left without a supply of the premium hardwood that our business relied upon.

It was then we entered into a productive relationship with Mary Valley Timbers, a green hardwood sawmill near Gympie, who had a similar focus on quality and cut 95% Spotted Gum and Ironbark.
